Our Record

“I entered politics in 2015 because I care deeply about North Vancouver and Canada and about   the type of future our children will inherit.

Our government, working with Canadians from coast to coast to coast, has a demonstrated record of driving progressive and lasting change - from real and impactful advances in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss, to historic investments in infrastructure, affordable housing, and childcare, we have delivered with and for Canadians.

We are at a pivotal moment in our nation's and our planet’s history - particularly with respect to climate change. We cannot afford to slide backwards.  Now more than ever, we must build on the progress that has been made and continue the hard work of making Canada a more sustainable, equitable and prosperous country.”
- Jonathan Wilkinson, Liberal Candidate for North Vancouver

Prosperity

Over the past 18 months your federal government has worked to manage the COVID-19 pandemic in a manner that supported families, businesses and individuals. Now, we need a government that is focused on building a resilient economy that will thrive in the low carbon world of the future.

Working with Canadians, our government has a plan to create 1 million new jobs. We have announced:

  • A historic investment of $14.9 billion in public and green transit projects around Canada, as well as a new and permanent stream of funding for public transit.

  • A $400 million investment through the Active Transportation Fund to help build new and expanded pathways, bike lanes, and trails.

  • The creation of the $1.5 billion program to support green and accessible upgrades of existing community buildings and the construction of new community centres.

  • The development of thousands of jobs in the trades by helping Canadians make their homes more efficient and affordable through the Canada Greener Homes Grant.

  • Historic investments in BC’s clean tech sector - a hub for the development of low carbon products and technologies.

  • A contract with North Vancouver’s Seaspan Shipyards to build one of two new icebreakers, thereby creating 1400 jobs in our community over the next decade.

Sustainability

Action to protect the environment and address the threat of climate change has been central to Jonathan’s work in government over the past six years.

Last year, Jonathan announced Canada’s strengthened plan to exceed our 2030 emissions targets. This includes: putting a price on pollution while returning the money to Canadians; providing incentives for the deployment of zero emission vehicles (ZEV) and for making our homes and buildings more energy efficient; implementing smart regulations to reduce emissions from key industrial sectors; and making unprecedented investments in cleantech. In the last two years alone, Canada has:

  • Raised its 2030 emissions reductions target from 30% below 2005 levels to 40-45%.

  • Enshrined into law Canada’s commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050 by legislating legally-binding targets that will hold governments accountable.

  • Committed to 100% ZEV sales in Canada by 2035.

  • Initiated a ban on harmful single use plastics.

  • Committed $2.3 billion to continue the expansion of protected and conserved spaces and the protection and recovery of species at risk.

  • Introduced a bill to modernize Canada’s most important piece of environmental legislation - the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA).

Equity

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed existing inequalities, and created new ones, for the most vulnerable Canadians. We must directly address the inequities that face families, seniors, workers, as well as Indigenous and minority communities, to make Canada a more just society by:

• Providing $30B to deliver $10/day child care across Canada
by 2025, cutting current costs in half by the end of 2022.

• Increasing Old Age Security payments by 10% (for 75+) and setting new effective long-term care facilities standards.

• Investing $2.5B in Canada’s Mortgage and Housing Corp. and boosting the First Time Home Buyer’s Incentive.

• Working towards a national Pharmacare plan and saving Canadians $13B on prescription drugs with new regulatory guidelines.

• Committing to implementing the UN Declaration of the
Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

• Funding $6 billion in Indigenous infrastructure to end 108 long term drinking water advisories since 2015.
